Top Rules for a Happy House Share

Renting a property with a friend or acquaintance? Never lived with anyone before? Here are some top tips to help manage your new living situation.

Understand Your Tenancy Agreement

Most likely you and your housemates have signed a joint tenancy agreement that outlines the rules of the tenancy. Keep a copy of it handy in case there is confusion over tenant/landlord responsibilities.

Bills

It's up to you and the person (or people) you live with to decide how to split the bills (most flatmates go 50/50).

Cleaning

Agree on which areas are communal and divide the cleaning duties equally. If you really hate cleaning, split the costs of a professional cleaner.

Respect

If you and your flatmate have different work schedules, be respectful of their space and your noise levels.

Food

At the start of the tenancy, decide if you will shop together or separately. Can some items be shared and others kept for yourself? Whatever you agree, stick to it.
